Casablanca – Members of the Justice and Development Party have called on Abdelilah Benkirane to participate in a political intiative to contain the unrest in Hoceima. They have also demanded the summoning of Interior Minister to the House of Representatives “regarding the security forces’ handling of the peaceful protests.”

Leading members of the Justice and Development Party (PJD) paid a visit to the former Head of Government, Abdelilah Benkirane, at his residence Thursday and invited him to help devise a political initiative headed by the party vis-à-vis the unrest in the northern city ofHoceima and other Moroccan cities

“As the party was part of the solution in 2011, it has to make the initiative today as well and take a political leap that is disconnected from the government in order to calm the situation down,” the PJD members reportedly said.

Their pitch came after Abdelilah Benkirane remained silent regarding the unrest, and included “the formation of a national committee of credible figures to frame a dialogue around the developments in the political situation and the protests.”

On another note, head of the PJD in the House of Representatives, Idriss Azami Idrissi, submitted a request to the head of the Interior Ministry Committee at the Parliament, in conformity with Chapter 102 of the Constitution, to convene a meeting in the presence of the Interior Minister, Abdelouafi Laftit

Azami, had complained about “not involving the parliament” in the discussion of Hoceima unrest. The meeting he requested aims at “listening to the the Director General of National Security, Abdellatif Hammouchi, Regarding the treatment of security forces’ handling of the peaceful protests and sit-ins, especially in the Hoceima region.

The Interior Minister’s presence at the House of Representatives has been set for Tuesdayto hear his statements regarding a number of questions related to the uprisings in Hoceima and the security interventions.

For his part, the Minister of Justice, Mohammed Aujjar, affirmed the respect of the legal procedures and gave guarantees for“just trials” for the leaders of the protests arrested last week. During a presentation before the government council, Aujjar denied any violations of the law during these arrests as well asany rumored abuctions.
