Rabat – Despite the blazing sun in Rabat, hundreds of Moroccans took to the streets of the capital on Sunday to ask for “dignity” and “social justice.”

Demonstrators, united under the Popular Front for Dignity and Social Justice, included opponents of government retirement reform, teacher trainees and unemployed university graduates. All marched the main streets to express their anger over government policies.

In addition to releasing the Rif protesters currently under detention, marchers advocated their own demands.

The march called for “completely solving the problem of teacher trainees” who are not all employed by the Ministry of Education.

Demonstrators also called for the employment of University master’s and doctorate graduates in the public sector, and pulling out of government retirement reform laws.

In addition, calls were issued to cancel the pensions of ministers and members of Parliament.

The demonstration signaled that the government of Saad Eddine El Othmani, which inherited several burning social issues from its sister government led by Abdelilah Benkirane and the previous cabinet, couldface a difficult time dealing with these issues.

In June, the government acknowledged that the number of protests in Morocco had increased in 2017.

According to government spokesperson, Mustapha El Khalfi, the year has seen 11 thousand demonstrations taking place in the kingdom, which could be seen as an indication on growing public anger toward government policies.
