El Mortada Iamrachen Appears Monday in Salé Court

Rabat – Following a temporary release to attend his father’s funeral, Rifian protest activist El Mortada Iamrachen appeared at Salé’s Court of Terrorism on Monday morning for his first hearing.

The former Salafi activist was detained on June 10 for allegations that he had “praised terrorism.” His arrest sparked criticism on Moroccan social media, as the activist is known for his moderate political and religious stances.

During his temporary release, Iamrachen became involved with young activists who were calling for calm and a decreased security presence in the Rif region.

Iamrachen was among the Rif protest activists who agreed to engage in dialogue with the government in order to resolve the ongoing crisis in the Rif, where demonstrations have continued for nine months since the death of fishmonger Mouhcine Fikri in October 2016.
