Rabat – Dr. Mohamed Benaâjiba, the director of the National Blood Transfusion Center, has called on health officials and functionaries to make massive mobilization efforts to raise the number of blood donors, according to a report released on Tuesday.

The report states that CNTS has rung alarm bells regarding a severe shortage of blood reserves, caused by the decrease in the number of blood donors.

According to Benaâjiba, the shrinking number endangers the lives of patients who are in urgent need of blood, like those suffering fromblood cancer and kidney failure.

The doctor said that health functionaries should become a model to Moroccan citizens and donate.

Morocco is in a critical position concerning blood reserves, as the number of blood donors was just 310,680 in 2016. This total represents 0.95 percent of the total population, which remains below the recommendations of the World Health Organization.
