Rabat – The Law banning burka in public spaces has gone into force in Austria on Sunday. Women wearing the full-face and body veil in public places will be fined EUR 150 immediately.
The Austrian government approved the ban on full-face veil in May. The country claims that, the new legislation aims to protect the Austrian values, reported British news outlet, BBC.
According to the new law “those who are not prepared to accept Enlightenment values will have to leave our country and society,” added the same source.
Officials in Vienna claimed that the seeks encourage ‘acceptance and respect’.
“Acceptance and respect of Austrian values are basic conditions for successful cohabitation between the majority Austrian population and people from third countries living in Austria,” explained the Austrian government.
The ban sparked many protests in January, when thousands of people took to the capital city of Austria, Vienna to express their rejection of the new ban on full-face veils in public spaces.
Protesters have reportedly been accusing the government of perpetuating Islamophobia and sexism.
