Rabat – Moroccan magistrate Saadia Belmir has been elected for a fourth term in the United Nations Committee against Torture, following a vote held Thursday, October 5 in Geneva.
Belmir won 96 out of 139 total votes during the 16th Meeting of States Parties to the Convention against Torture and Other Cruel, Inhuman or Degrading Treatment, made by the representatives of the conventions member states.
The renewal of the Moroccan magistrate for a fourth term in the UN body is a recognition of Belmir’s skills and her active involvement in the work of the committee. The new success consolidates in particular the positioning of the kingdom and the credibility of its efforts in the field of the fight against torture, at the national and international levels.
Belmir, the only Arab and African woman member of the Committee against Torture, currently serves as VicePresident, and will continue for another four-year term in UN body composed of ten experts recognized for their competence in the field of human rights.
A former chamber president at the former Supreme Court, Belmir was a member of the G14 think tank set up by King Hassan II. She was also a member of the Constitutional Council between 1999 and 2005.
