Rabat – United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) has set its eyes on Morocco’s industrial development plan, commending the country’s recent progress in inclusive and sustainable industrial development.

During a two-day visit to Morocco, UNIDO Director General Li Yong met with the Head of Government, Saad-Eddine El Othmani, to discuss ways to advance inclusive and sustainable industrial development in Morocco and strengthen collaborations and strategic partnerships with UNIDO.

El Othmani said at the meeting that “the government of Morocco acknowledges the leading role that industrialization can play in further advancing the inclusive and sustainable development of our country and looks for increased cooperation with UNIDO in the area of sustainable industrial development.”

Director General Li also attended a roundtable discussion on UNIDO-Morocco partnership perspectives chaired by the Ministry of Industry, Investment, Trade and Digital Economy, during which Morocco’s industrial acceleration plan was discussed.

Yong recognized the government’s continued support for UNIDO’s activities and commended the country’s recent progress in inclusive and sustainable industrial development.

Yong also held meetings with the Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Nasser Bourita, and the Minister of Economy and Finance, Mohamed Bousaid.

“I would like to commend Morocco for its clear vision of industrial development and underscore the great potential of the country to become a manufacturing hub,” said the Director General.

UNIDO’s cooperation with Morocco mainly focuses on improving national infrastructure, including skills development and vocational training in the heavy construction sector.

In its 2014 annual report, the UNIDO said that it had has created over 20,000 jobs and provided training to more than 50,000 students in countries including Morocco, Algeria, Brazil, China, and Egypt, steering “a clear course towards sustainable economic and industrial development.”

The report noted that UNIDO had work with the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) and Volvo group in a public-private partnership to operate a vocational training academy in Morocco on heavy construction equipment and commercial vehicles, in order to promote economic growth, youth employment, and gender equality in North and West Africa.

UNIDO also aims to enrich the food value chain development and environmental protection in the kingdom. The organization has assisted Morocco to pioneer a contest for origin-linked products, as part of Morocco’s strategies to achieve its national green plan, which gives priority to small-scale farmers and producers.
