Rabat – Princess Lalla Hasnaa, as the chairwoman of the Mohammed VI Foundation for Environment Protection, co-chaired a high-level session on Education Day on Thursday in Bonn with executive secretary of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), Patricia Espinosa.
Held under the theme “Global partnerships to combat climate change through education,” the event concluded with the signing of a memorandum of understanding between the Foundation and the UNFCCC.
Both parties agreed to implement the Action for Climate Empowerment (article 6 of the UNFCCC) to cooperate, educate, train, and raise public awareness on climate change.
The action focuses on education, training, public awareness, public participation, public access to information, and international cooperation on these issues, providing a flexible, phased approach to the strategic and systematic implementation of the action.
Since 2009, the Foundation has been an observer member of the UNFCCC and participates each year in the COPs through speeches and workshops.
At the beginning of the session, Princess Lalla Hasnaa attended a student performance about climate change.
The Princess was accompanied by spokesman for the UNFCCC Nick Nuttall, Minister of Culture and Communication Mohamed Laaraj, Secretary of State to the Minister of Energy, Mining and Sustainable Development Nezha El Ouafi, and COP22 President Salaheddine Mezouar.
Princess Lalla Hasnaa represented King Mohammed VI at the opening ceremony of the United Nation’s COP23 climate change conference Wednesday in Bonn.
The opening ceremony of the COP23 high-level segment saw speeches by the UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres, President of the Federal Republic of Germany Frank-Walter Steinmeier, Fiji’s Prime Minister and COP23 President Frank Bainimarama and UNGA President Miroslav Lajcak.
Princess Lalla Hasnaa also attended an informal meeting of heads of state and government before the official opening chaired by Guterres.
