Rabat – African media outlet site Afrika News has ranked the Moroccan Kasbah of Ait Ben Haddou in Ouarzazate as one of the top four most distinguished UNESCO heritage sites across Africa.

The famous Kasbah made it to the top of the list ahead of Victoria Falls located between Zimbabwe and Zambia, Kenya’s lake system, and the Namib Sand Sea in Namibia.

The editor of the African website said that “Morocco is one of the most appealing touristic [locations] in Africa that encompasses several interesting areas such as Ksar Aït Benhaddou.”

Declared a UNESCO site in 1987, Aït Benhaddou is a great example of the resilient earthen clay architecture in the southeast of Morocco.

The kasbah of Ait Ben Haddou is actually a “ksar” (a set of kasbahs and adobe houses), where many people still live in a traditional lifestyle, with tourism as the primary source of income for most of them.

Given its unique architecture, the village of Ait Ben Haddou has captured many tourists all over the world and particularly the interest of Hollywood top producers.

You can get a glimpse of this popular film-making location in movies such as Lawrence of Arabia, The Jewel of the Nile, Babel, Prince of Persia, and the television series Games of Thrones to name a few.

This year, Google celebrated Morocco’s Independence Day on November 18, with a “doodle” on its homepage featuring the “outstanding” architecture of Ksar Aït Ben Haddou.
