Moroccan Women Are Displaying Their Bodies on YouTube to Get Ahead

Fez – Since the beginning of history, the female body and its power over men has been a source of scientific, literary, and philosophical controversy. Today, Moroccan women put the female body on display through their YouTube channels in order to get ahead in life.

People have always believed women have power over men through their bodies. But are some female bodies powerless over men? Are there some traits that make one body attractive and powerful and another undesirable?

Of course, attractiveness is relative. The same woman can be found attractive by one person and unattractive by another.

Yet, in the 21st century, media plays a crucial role in engraving the image of the “perfect” female body in the minds of both men and women. In Morocco, the younger generation of both sexes is fascinated by attractive Instagram pictures they see while scrolling their Instagram feeds.

When young girls dream of owning smooth long hair, wide eyes, pure skin, and curves, their fantasy becomes a nightmare of unachievable beauty standards. They jump from one Facebook girls’ group to another looking for recipes and tips to reshape their bodies, making them look pathetic.

On the other hand, girls who own the “universally-acknowledged” traits of an attractive body thank God for the natural blessings they were given. Unconsciously and consciously encouraged by many members of the society, including their own mothers sometimes, these girls try to use their attractive features to better their social status.

At precisely that moment, the body becomes part of a young Moroccan girl’s money-making potential or capital. I do not specifically mean to talk about prostitution, in which the female body literally becomes a source of income. But I rather speak about the female body as symbolic capital which paves her way to economic capital.

The internet has facilitated the task of these girls in attracting everyone’s attention. Recently, many well-known media channels, such as France 24, have shed light on Moroccan YouTube content, which is becoming more catastrophic day after day.

Many Moroccan women of different ages are broadcasting a kind of video they call “My Daily Routine” in which they offer nothing to humanity apart from pornographic-like content revealing their beauty.

Unfortunately, they show off their bodies like properties. Indeed, a new form of digital prostitution is emerging in 21st century Morocco, the result of ill-used modern means of communication.

Allowing everyone to access the internet and have agency is actually dangerous in a society overborne with ignorance and a blind, passive imitation of the West. Everyone watches the YouTube videos in private, and everyone criticizes them in public, highlighting ignorance and schizophrenia in Moroccan society.
