Rabat – The football season in the five major European leagues officially came to an end last weekend. The weird season saw Atletico Madrid, Inter Milan, and Lille OSC winning the titles in Spain, Italy, and France respectively, breaking the hegemony of the wealthiest clubs.
First league title since 2014
After a long wait, Atletico Madrid is finally back on the scene. They won the LaLiga title for the second time in the last seven years following a dramatic 2-1 final round win.
Atletico Madrid has surprisingly outclassed two European giants; Barcelona FC and Real Madrid, in the race for the title. While observers’ nominations are always split between Barcelona and Real Madrid, Diego Simeone’s side stood in the way thanks to their solid defense and realistic squad.
Diego Simeone or “El Cholo” has done great work to get the best out of the Uruguayan goalscorer Luis Suarez. The former Barcelona FC striker scored 21 goals and provided three assists in 32 appearances in LaLiga this season.
The end of a dynasty
Juventus FC had the chance this year to make it a decade of consecutive league title wins but failed as Inter Milan put an end to their run.
Inter Milan has returned to their days of glory in Serie A. It is Inter’s first league title since 2010.
In his second year in charge of Inter, Antonio Conte succeeded to lead the Nerazzurri back to the winning ways supported by Achraf Hakimi, Romelu Lukaku, and Lautaro Martinez, three key players in the season.
Conte said: “We’re breaking up a dynasty. Not even in my wildest dreams could I have imagined that we’d make up this much ground on the team that dominated Serie A for nine years in the space of two seasons.”
Inter Milan and Manchester City were the only two teams to suffer the least as they secured the title several days in advance.
Lille OSC breaks PSG’s dominance
France’s Ligue 1 had a heart-stopping end that saw Lille OSC crowned in the last minute. The title ends the run of three consecutive Ligue 1 titles for Paris Saint-Germain.
Lille OSC lifted the trophy after 10 years of drought, thanks to a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Angers with one point ahead of PSG.
After having taken the lead of the Ligue 1 after the 22nd day, Lille remained constant in their performance to finally win the title.
Lille remained constant in their performances since they topped the standings, thwarting all predictions favoring Pochehttinho’s PSG.
