Rabat – The US has invited Morocco’s Royal Navy to take part in the 2021 Exercise Sea Breeze, a multinational maritime exercise.

Co-hosted by the US and Ukraine, the maneuver will take place from June 28 to July 10 in the Black Sea region, US Navy official website announced.

America’s Navy listed Morocco among the 32 countries that will take part in the navy maneuver this year.

In addition to Morocco, only Senegal, Tunisia, and  Egypt will be representing the African continent in the maneuver.

Moroccan newspaper Al Ahdath Al Maghribia reported that this will be Morocco’s first  participation in the event.

The other participating countries include Albania, Australia, Brazil, Bulgaria, Canada, Denmark, Estonia, France, Georgia, Greece, Israel, Italy, Japan, and Latvia, Lithuania, Moldova, Norway, Pakistan, Poland, Romania, Spain, South Korea, Sweden, Turkey, Ukraine, and the UK. .

The event, which will involve sea, land, and air exercises, aims to improve interoperability and compatibility among the participating forces in the Black Sea region, the US navy said in a statement.

Commenting on the event, the charge d’affaires at the US embassy in Ukraine, Kristina Kvien, expressed satisfaction and said that the US is committed to “maintaining the safety and security of the Black Sea.”

The inter-ally maritime exercises will serve as an opportunity for navy personnel from all participating countries to engage in “realistic maritime training to build experience and teamwork and strengthen our interoperability as we work toward mutual goals.”

The announcement to include Morocco in the list of the Exercise Sea Breeze comes just a few days after the conclusion of the 2021 African Lion military exercise, which started on June 7 and concluded Friday,  June 18.

The African Lion exercises took place across Morocco, including in Agadir Tifnit, Tan Tan, Mahbes, Tafraout, Ben Guerir, and Kenitra.

The exercise reflected the US’ and Morocco’s commitment to fostering their security cooperation.

African Lion is the largest annual military exercise organized by the US Africa Command.
