Rabat – Former Egypt international Ahmed Hossam Mido has praised Morocco’s national team following their performance against the Netherlands in the World Cup round of 32.
Mido spoke positively about the players’ mentality, their relationship with one another, and their strong connection to their faith and families.
“The Moroccan national team is a team that makes us proud,” Mido said in media remarks.
“The average age of the squad is 26, and coach Mohamed Ouahbi brought on three players under the age of 21 despite being behind against the Netherlands.”
Mido hails Morocco’s performance
Mido also praised Morocco’s approach during the match and their ability to control possession against one of Europe’s most respected national teams.
“Morocco played a great football battle and controlled possession,” he said.
“The Netherlands are a historic football nation and one of the pioneers of total football.”
“To have 70% possession against the Netherlands is a major achievement.”
Morocco came from behind to draw 1-1 before defeating the Netherlands 3-2 on penalties and securing a place in the round of 16.
Players remain connected to their values
Mido said he was particularly impressed by the strong relationship between Morocco’s players.
He also praised them for remaining connected to their religion and their mothers despite spending much of their careers in Europe.
“What I really like is the bond between the players,” he said.
“Despite playing in Europe, whenever they are asked a question, their answer is always that they are Muslims and that their religion is based on the group, not individuals.”
“They work for the team and are very connected to their mothers. You always see each player thinking first about going to his mother.”
Morocco’s unity has been widely seen as one of the main reasons behind the team’s recent success.
The Atlas Lions will now continue their World Cup campaign after eliminating the Netherlands and will face Canada on Saturday.
