Rabat – Sources within the Istiqlal party (Independance party) revealed that Chabat’s latest political actions are not serving the party’s best interest and are directed by “external political bodies.”

Hamid Chabat has re-emerged to the political scene after a self-imposed exile, before the election dates were officially announced. It was confirmed that the Independence Party was not going to support his return as the Secretary General since he lost the collective’s recommendation.

Sources explained that Chabat chose to escalate the situation following the party’s decision and refused to accept and comply with the party leadership’s decision. Chabat’s non-compliance and constant defiant unilateral action are hurting the Independence Party, and indirectly helping competitors, the sources said.

A party leader, who remained anonymous, affirmed that the party’s position regarding Chabat is a result of his failure in managing the local affairs of the city of Fez.

In addition to the multiple scandals Chabat’s been involved in during his time in office, serious irregularities and financial imbalances plagued the projects he undertook as mayor of the scientific capital.

Chabat has been the center of many serious allegations and investigations, some relating to mismanagement of government funds, while others concern fraudulent deals, and nepotism. The Independence Party’s choice to not recommend him for office in the 2021 election is understood by citizens and party officials alike as being justified.

The city of Fez is now under the leadership of the Justice and Development Party (PJD) and Istiqlal is determined to gain back its constituency in the scientific capital.

The same party source stressed that “Hamid Chabat has demonstrated his intention to oppose the Independence Party and to engage in political battle as an opponent as he aims to sabotage the party’s leadership in the upcoming elections to influence the outcome of the elections..”

“Chabat disappointed the Independence party, and ultimately the collective decision is in the interest of the party,” the sources added.
