Rabat – The STMicroelectronics’ manufacturing plant, 20 kilometers outside of Casablanca in the city of Bouskoura, reportedly began manufacturing Tesla Motor’s semiconductor. The company specializes in manufacturing Tesla’s SiC metal-oxide-semiconductor field-effect transistors (MOSFETs).
The SiC-MOSFET is the vehicles main power source which relies on silicon carbide, a rare natural mineral.
Many experts in the automobile industry consider STMicroelectronics’ manufacturing of the Tesla energy source in Morocco a win for the kingdom. Morocco has succeeded in getting its foot in the door of the electric automobile industry early.
In February 2021, world-renowned Moroccan scientist and engineer, Rachid Yazimi, spoke with Morocco World News about Morocco’s potential to be a regional pioneer in electric vehicles and charging stations.
“So the best time to invest in this technology is now. Because the market will need fast charging stations all over, and we will need many 100s of thousands of recharge stations for EV,” said Yazimi.
By developing the necessary electronic components for Tesla in Morocco, consumers have begun to speculate whether or not the electric automobile giant will begin distributions in Morocco.
Tesla currently has showrooms and dealerships in several states in the US, including showrooms in Jordan, the UAE, and other international locations. Morocco would be the first African nation to offer the electric vehicle on showroom floors.
However, consumers may purchase Teslas abroad, and operate the vehicle in Morocco.
In addition to potentially bringing the electric vehicle to Morocco, the manufacturing of electric vehicles may peak the interest of other electric car manufacturers in the kingdom.
In December 2017, Chinese electric vehicle (EV) automaker BYD became the third EV automaker to establish a manufacturing plant in Morocco.
