Rabat – Moroccan athletes won a total of 16 medals at the 2021 Arab Athletics Championships in Tunis.
The competition, which takes place every two years, ran between June 16 and June 20 this year in the Tunisian harbor city of Radis, at the Stade Olympique de Rades. With 44 events in total, Moroccan athletes brought home 16 medals, winning four medals on the last day of the sporting event. In the course of the event Morocco earned six gold medals, four silver medals, and an additional six bronze medals.
During the final day of sporting events, Saturday, June 19, the Moroccan athlete Fatima-Ezzahra Gardadi took home a gold medal in the 10,000 meter run, while her compatriot, Hanane Qalouj, came in second place, bringing home a silver medal.

Mohamed Hamadi finished in second place in the triple jump event, winning Saturday’s second silver medal for the Moroccan team. Soukaina Zarrouk placed third in hammer throwing, earning the only Moroccan bronze medal of the day.
Three other Moroccan athletes managed to pass qualification but did not win any medals, Mehdi Takardmioui, Chokri Mach, and Assia Rezki all qualified for the 200 meter dash.
The two other competition days, Wednesday and Thursday, saw Morocco secure five gold medals, two silver medals, and five bronze medals. Rahma Tahiri in the 5000 meter run, Mohamed Tindouft in the 3000 meter steeplechase, Hizlane Siba in the high jump, Soukaina Hajji in the 800 meter run, and Assia Raziki in the 400 meter run all won gold medals.
Yousra Lajdoud won silver in the long jump and Abdellatif Sadiki placed second in the 1,500 meter run.
The Moroccan bronze-winners are Mouchin Outalha in the 10,000 meter run, Ana’s Essayi in the 1,500 meter event, Salma Lahlali in the 400 meters, Mohamed Koussi in the 110 meter hurdles, and Noura Ennadi in the 100 meter hurdles event.
Overall, 24 Moroccan athletes represented the North African country in the championship, from a total of over 400 athletes from 20 countries. The event was of utmost importance for many athletes, since it served as a qualifying stage for the upcoming Tokyo Olympic Games.
