Rabat – Morocco’s election commission launched its internal monitoring body on Wednesday. It is tasked with supervising the upcoming 2021 election on the local level.

The central commission is an ad hoc committee under the supervision of the ministry of interior and the public prosecutor’s office. Its main goal is the oversight of the election process on both the local and national levels. This year, it’s headed by the Minister of Interior Abdelouafi Laftit Lakbiachi and the President of the Public Prosecutor Moulay El Hassan Daki.

On this same occasion, the political supervisory body announced the launch of new provincial commissions tasked with the follow-up of the elections on the local level.

The adjunct local commissions are made up of the wali (governor) of each province and district, the attorney general or the public prosecutor, as well as regional commissions responsible for supporting the work of the provincial commissions at the regional level across Morocco.

The mission of the central commission and its local extensions on the provincial and regional levels consists of taking practical measures to ensure the integrity of electoral operations.

The statement of the Ministry elaborated on this ambition and its fulfillment by citing the measures that it will undertake in this upcoming election.

The ministry stated that it will ensure the meticulous monitoring of the election process n, throughout its various stages. It intends to produce a smooth election and a responsive and robust electoral system.

The plans of the commission are laid out across the electoral process, ranging from voter registration to the announcement of the final ballot results and the subsequent election of the bodies and structures of local councils, local authorities, and professional chambers.

The central commission and the provincial and regional commissions will undertake their missions in strict compliance with the legislative laws and regulations in force, and with respect to the respective attributions and powers conferred by law to adjacent legislative, administrative, and judicial bodies.

In order to ensure the validity and efficiency of the upcoming election, the local commissions will implement measures to immediately detect violations that warrant  an investigation or prosecution procedures when necessary.

In the spirit of the participatory approach marking this election, the central commission will hold regular meetings with the leaders of national political parties.. The cooperation will concern the management and preparations for election day.  The commission also highly welcomes the parties’ proposals on measures to be taken to improve the democratic process.
