Rabat – A Spanish gunman shot and murdered a young Moroccan man named Younes this Sunday while shouting racist, anti-Moroccan slurs in the spanish city of Murcia.
The victim’s friends and relatives, as well as many unrelated locals gathered on Tuesday in Murcia, to protest against the heinous crime.
Footage has since gone viral of the victim’s mother pleading with protestors to do right by her son by refraining from committing more violence.
“Don’t forsake Younes’s right with violence, if you strike you become aggressors, and we are not terrorists,” she said.
Younes’s mother also asked the protestors to speak up for their rights peacefully. She reaffirms that Youness’s killing was due to racism, saying “Younes was killed because of racism; he had no problem with him – the killer.”
Youness, a father of a 10-year old son, died in intensive care only hours after his hospitalization.
On Sunday, Younes was on a cafe terrace with his partner. The cafe is renowned for having a large immigrant clientele. Carlos, the shooter, was at the same establishment and reportedly showed his disdain towards the victim. On several occasions he left and returned to the cafe. Later that night, Carlos returned with a pistol and shot the victim three times in the chest.
The shooter allegedly had “a heated exchange” with Younes, which he settled with the fatal shooting.
To many, the devastating murder is largely a result of the recent surge in anti-Moroccan racism in Spain. This comes amid the biased, anti-Morocco coverage Spanish media have led in the past few weeks after Morocco-Spain diplomatic tensions deepened.
