Rabat – Morocco’s General Directorate of Meteorology (DMN) forecasts the ongoing heatwave to continue until Saturday, June 12 in several provinces.
DMN published a statement on Thursday, forecasting the three-day heatwave.
The special weather notice of level orange suggests that the temperatures could reach 45 Celsius degrees in some provinces.
The temperatures will range between 40 to 45 degrees in different provinces throughout the country including Aousserd, Assa-Zag, Smara, Oued Ed-Dahab, Taroudant, Tata, and Zagora.
High temperatures in Morocco are common starting in May.
The DMN announced in April that the year 2020 was the hottest year on record in Morocco.
In addition, the DMN emphasized that the average temperature of 2020 exceeded the average climate for the period between 1981 and 2010 by +1.4 degrees Celsius.
2020 is also considered among the four driest years in Moroccan history since 1981. The annual deficit was about 33 % during the agricultural season, extending from September 2019 to August 2020.
The situation affected Morocco’s production of cereals, which marked a decrease of 39 % compared to the 2018-2019 season and 57 % compared to an average year since 2008.
Morocco’s agriculture sector contributes 19% to Morocco’s Gross National Product (GNP). Approximately 80% of the 14 million rural inhabitants also rely on the agricultural sector revenues.
After a nearly completely dry season last year, Morocco’s Ministry of Agriculture expects a good agriculture season this year due to the rainfalls that were recorded during the 2020/2021 season.
In March, the Ministry of Agriculture said that the first three months in 2021 witnessed a “very positive impact” in terms of the agricultural season.
According to the ministry, the recent rainfalls have improved the environment for plant growth, facilitated maintenance work for farmers, and markedly improved dams’ reservoirs and groundwater levels for agricultural use.
