Rabat – Morocco’s Ministry of Health announced 7,529 new confirmed COVID-19 cases in Morocco on July 31, 2021. In addition, the ministry noted 4,522 recoveries and 53 deaths.

Although Morocco has yet to record over 10,000 cases in 24 hours, the daily count of confirmed cases has recorded an average of 7,694 cases per day in the past week.

According to the official COVID-19 report, the ministry stated that Morocco has recorded a total of 623,528 COVID-19 cases since the start of the pandemic. The kingdom has also recorded a total of 9,785 deaths and 561,930 recoveries.

Of the cases recorded in the past 24 hours, 950 were severe, 30 required emergency ventilation, and 518 required supplementary oxygen. Moroccan hospitals are currently at 30% capacity, noting an increase from 29.8% on Friday.

The combination of Moroccans Residing Abroad (MREs) returning for Operation Marhaba, paired with the past week’s Eid al-Adha festivities, may be a reason for the sharp increase in COVID-19 cases.

Casablanca and the surrounding region maintains the record for most new cases in 24 hours with 1,808 cases and 17 deaths in 24 hours. Following Casablanca, the Rabat-Sale region recorded 1,329 new cases and 3 deaths.

Other regions such as Marrakech-Safi, Agadir’s Souss-Massa, Beni Mellal-Khenifra, and Tangier-Tetouan-Al Hoceima have recorded more than at least 400 new cases. Smaller municipalities such as Draa-Tafilalet, Oujda, Guelmim, Fes-Meknes, and Morocco’s southern territories have recorded between 70 and 300 cases each.

Morocco has focused on extending its vaccination campaign to more of its population. On Friday, the Wali of the Fez-Meknes region announced that the region would repurpose a large sporting complex to administer the COVID-19 vaccine.

Additionally, an influx of vaccines from Morocco’s foriegn allies such as the US and China have improved the kingdom’s ability to rapidly vaccinate its population.

Since Morocco passed the 10 million mark for fully-vaccinated Moroccans and residents on July 28, it has recorded an additional 124,505 full-vaccinations, accounting for 27.7% of the population. Morocco has also vaccinated 13,631,005 people with at least one dose.

Currently, 6,985,179 people have taken a COVID-19 test, 32,281 of which were in the last 24 hours.

The kingdom’s COVID-19 mortality rate is holding at 1.6%, although the recovery rate has decreased from  94.2% on July 24 to 90.1%.

The Moroccan government is calling on the public to get vaccinated and continue to respect COVID-19 health-related measures. By extending the state of emergency until September 10, the government hopes that the public will continue to wear masks in public spaces and respect social distancing guidelines.

A new campaign warning of the prevalence of COVID-19 appears on many of the kingdom’s official websites and news sites. The message reads, “COVID-19 is still a threat!”

There are 51,813 active cases of COVID-19 in Morocco and the number is expected to increase, according to the current trend of confirmed daily cases.
