Morocco’s Tangier Examines Cable Car Project

Rabat – The Tangier Port Development company presented a cable car proposal on Tuesday, July 27.

Moroccan television channel 2M reported that the cable car project will be implemented over a two-kilometer distance and will consist of four stations.

The city plans to execute the project in two phases. The first phase is intended to reach the Borj Naam area, and provide access to other nearby locations.

The first phase, which consists of a 1.3-kilometer distance, is scheduled for completion by 2024.

The second phase of the project will be implemented in a 700-meter area.

The global project seeks to provide transportation for 2,000 people per hour.

Mohamed Ounaya, the director of the Development Company for the Conversion of the Port Zone of Tangier (SAPT) expressed satisfaction over the project, saying that it will be “symbolic and a modern transportation facility.”

The project also seeks to promote tourism within the city and nearby regions located on the northern bank of the Mediterranean.

The project is expected to require a global budget of MAD 240 million.

The director of the company emphasized that Tangier is considered a “suitable” place for the creation of a cable car transport system.

“This is going to be the first cable car [project] in Morocco,” he said.

The development company emphasized that it turned to international expertise offices for a consultation to determine the aspects of the project, its maintenance, and management.

The technical director at SAPT, Driss Benabad, also commented on the project, explaining that the hub will serve as an urban and tourist transport system.

The company is set to launch a tender to choose a company to develop and manage the project for a 30-year period.

This is not the first time such a project was discussed in Morocco.

In 2019, local executives in Rabat proposed a similar project to link Morocco’s twin cities of Rabat and Sale.

The project has not seen the light of the day yet, however.
