Denver- Morocco’s Foreign Minister is the latest to dismiss recent allegations of Moroccan spying.

Bourita stated in a recent interview that anyone making accusations would have to “put forward the evidence that they have, or do not have.” Bourita made these statements in a recent interview with African magazine Jeune Afrique.

The Minister labelled the accusatory statements as a “smokescreen,” and continued to maintain the country’s innocence in light of the situation. While the Minister did not label any specific organizations as responsible for the allegations, he pointed out these groups “serve agendas” that aim to attack Morocco and asserted the instigators were “known to the Kingdom.”

According to Bourita’s claims, Morocco is not in possession of the infamous Pegasus software that is claimed to be responsible for recent high level data leaks, and affirmed Morocco will remain “united” against the accusations. French media groups have been the primary accusers of Morocco’s alleged spying operation. The groups have accused Morocco of eavesdropping on journalists, activists, and even French President Macron.

Bourita repeated throughout his statements that the motivation of these groups remains to “damage the image of Morocco and its institutions,” and that Morocco has previously “observed peaks” of media hostility during important times for the nation. The Minister gave examples of previous attacks during Feast of the Throne celebrations as proof of this coordination, and stated “this year was no exception.”

Bourita concluded the interview by emphasizing the positive remarks given to the country by the US president. In addition to helping lead the Global Counterterrorism Forum and acting as a regional security force, Bourita noted that Morocco “has helped save lives, abort plans for attacks and to bring many terrorists and criminals to justice.” With this list of accomplishments under its belt, Bourita maintains Rabat will “gladly do without the satisfaction of Amnesty International and Forbidden Stories.”
