Rabat – A Moroccan Royal Navy coast guard assisted Galilea, a Spanish yacht, after an engine failure 20 kilometers off the coast of Nador on Saturday, July 17.
The operation was conducted at 6:30 p.m. when members of the royal navy were dispatched to retrieve those onboard.
The agency quoted a military source, saying that seven Spanish people were in the yacht.
The royal navy transferred the Spaniards safely to the port of Nador at 8:45 p.m.
The royal navy conducts patrols frequently against drug trafficking operations and to counter irregular migration.
The recent operation against irregular migration took place from July 10-14.
The coast guards rescued a total of 344 irregular migrations, most of them from sub-Saharan countries.
The migrants, who included women and children, were aboard makeshift boats facing difficulties.
In an anti-drug smuggling operation in June, the Royal Navy coast guard on maritime patrol in the Mediterranean seized five tonnes of cannabis resin off the coast of Nador.
The coast guard conducted a pursuit of a fast inflatable boat. In their haste to escape to open water by means of another vessel, the boat passengers abandoned the drugs and escaped.
The royal navy transported the abandoned drug shipment to the port of Nador and handed it over to the Royal Gendarmerie to conduct further investigations.
