Rabat – Casablanca’s leading football team, Wydad Athletic Club (WAC), won its 21st championship against MC Oujda on Wednesday, July 14. Also known as the Reds, the team defeated the eastern Moroccan team by a margin of 2-0.

Ayoub El Kaabi, Wydad’s striker since 2019, scored WAC’s first goal in the 64th minute of the match. Yahya Attiyat Allah, the Wydadi left winger, secured the lead in the 91st minute of the match and also assisted the first goal of the match.

The win guaranteed WAC’s position at the top of the Botola Pro D1 Inwi standings. In the past seven seasons, Wydad has come in first or second place.

Following Wydad’s championship win, the team took to its official twitter page to celebrate the win with fans.

Many fans in Casablanca celebrated with fireworks, chanting, and the blaring of car horns.

Wydad AC led the competition’s leaderboard with 63 points and led Casablanca’s Raja by 11 points, followed by FAR Rabat at 47 points.

The championship win is the 16th win since WAC’s first winning season in 1948. Before Morocco gained its independence from France, the Franco-Moroccan team won an additional five championships.

Mohamed Benjelloun created Wydad Athletic Club in May 1937 while Morocco was still under the French occupation. Initially, the club served as a water polo organization. However, in 1939, Benjelloun launched the WAC football team.

Wydad’s rival, Raja Casablanca, formed in 1949 and the two teams have continued to fight over supremacy in Morocco’s economic capital.

Each season, Wydad Casablanca and Raja Casablanca battle for the leading position in the Botola Pro. In 2020, Raja Casablanca secured its 12th title by beating El Jadida’s DHJ.

Raja Casablanca won the CAF Confederation Cup on July 10, prompting a congratulatory message from King Mohammed VI.

Despite WAC’s early success in the CAF Confederation Cup’s Group C, South Africa’s Kaiser Chiefs knocked the team out on June 19 in a 1-0 loss.

Football analysts have praised Wydad’s ability to score from set pieces. In the final goal against MC Oujda, WAC left-winger Yahya Attiyat Allah scored by kicking a free kick into the top right corner of the note from just outside the top right box.

Many attribute the skill of set play pieces to the coach, Faouzi Benzarti, the team’s 71-year-old Tunisian ex-football player.

The 2022 Botola tournament will take place in May 2022 and continues to lead Africa as the top football league, according to the International Federation of Football History & Statistics (IFFHS).
