The Moroccan police in Nador, eastern Morocco, have seized three tonnes of cannabis resin on Sunday, June 4.
Rabat – Security services have also arrested seven suspects for their alleged involvement in a criminal network active in an international drug and psychotropic trafficking ring, the General Directorate of National Security (DGSN) reported in a statement.
Police carried out the operation in different regions near Nador.
In the course of the search operations, the police carried out searches that led to the seizures of seven different cars, five hunting rifles, 63 rounds of ammunition, a motorcycle, bladed weapons, and cash potentially linked to drug trafficking.
The police have taken suspects, aged between 20 and 39, into custody for further investigation to determine the facts of the case.
DGSN mentioned that the operation took place in collaboration with the General Directorate of Territorial Surveillance (DGST).
The operation is part of Morocco’s approach towards combating and dismantling international drug trafficking networks.
A recent report from the UN Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) stated that the Moroccan authorities have seized approximately 300 tonnes of cannabis plants in 2019.
The ranking puts Morocco in sixth place worldwide in terms of the number of psychoactive substances seized.
In 2020, DGSN said police seized 217 tonnes and 323 kilograms of cannabis.
The figure indicates an increase of 37 tonnes compared to 2019.
During 2020, the police have arrested 97, 564 people for their involvement in drug trafficking cases.
