Denver- News that the US is maintaining its political stance vis-a-vis Western Sahara was officially confirmed on Thursday by a Department of State Spokesperson.

Ned Price, Spokesperson of the White House clarified US Position regarding Western Sahara on Thursday.

Ned Price said in a press conference that the US decision to recognize Morocco’s sovereignty over Western Sahara remains unchanged.

The recognition, according to Ned Price,”remains the administration position. I have no update for you… there is no change.”

Ned Price made the remarks when a journalist asked him whether what news outlet Axios reported recently is true.

Earlier on Thursday, Axios quoted sources that the Biden administration has no intention to roll back the proclamation Donald Trump signed in December, in which the former president recognized Morocco’s sovereignty over Western Sahara.

This speculation was attributed to a recent phone call between Brett Mcgurk and Moroccan Foreign Minister, Nasser Bourita, during which Mcgurk reportedly reaffirmed US policy towards Western Sahara.

The update from the US administration is a further setback to Polisario’s supporters- at the forefront of which are Algeria and Spain-, who have been attempting to lobby against Morocco’s territorial integrity.

Recently, reports said that Spain also attempted to convince the US to reverse its position regarding the conflict.

The US has joined 54 other countries that have either formally recognized Moroccan claims, or have terminated  support for the Polisario front.

Despite rumors over the past month that Biden was still undertaking a review of his successor’s momentous decision, Biden’s administration has evidently recognized the importance of maintaining positive political relations with Morocco, and this is demonstrated by their recognition of Moroccan sovereignty.

After the Biden administration has clarified its position on the conflict, the US is now the first power in the Western hemisphere to express clear support for Morocco’s territorial integrity.
