Rabat – The UAE has joined a host of regional powers in expressing concerns over recent developments between Algeria and Morocco after Algeria’s decision to sever ties.
Sheikh Abdullah bin Al Nahyan, the UAE’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, reaffirmed his country’s commitment to strengthening positive relations and unity between Arab countries.
Al Nahyan added that the UAE has always sought to strengthen Arab relations and deeply regrets the escalating tensions between Algeria and Morocco.
The Emirati FM argued his country has strong brotherly relations with both Maghrebi nations, adding that his government seeks to develop its relations with the two countries as part of its supportive approach to all joint efforts in the service of regional stability and prosperity.
Several other countries have also “regretted” Algeria’s decision to sever ties with Morocco.
France has urged the two North African countries to settle their disagreements, with the deputy spokesman for the French foreign ministry saying that President Emmanuel Macron’s administration is committed to stability in the Maghreb.
Saudi Arabia has also called on the two neighbors to maintain communication channels and discuss de-escalating their current tensions.
Similarly, the Organization of Islamic Cooperation issued a communique on Algeria’s decision to sever ties with Morocco, sharing its concerns about regional stability and urging Algiers and Rabat to engage in dialogue.
On Tuesday, Algeria’s Foreign Affairs Minister, Ramtane Lamamra, announced that Morocco’s “hostile” actions had forced the hand of the Algerian government, compelling it to cut ties with its western neighbor.
Lamamra claimed Morocco was responsible for the recent wildfires in the Kabylia region in northern Algeria.
