Rabat – Morocco’s customs services in Tanger-Med port seized recently a “significant” quantity of counterfeit gold jewelry.
The customs service of passenger control managed to seize nearly 1 kilogram of gold jewelry hidden in the luggage of a Moroccan resident abroad (MRE).
The passenger attempted to enter the territory without following the usual customs and indirect tax procedures.
Customs reported the seized jewelry value was estimated at MAD 500,000 ($ 56,017).
Security services handed the passenger, who resides in Italy, to judicial police for further investigation.
Customs and security services have also conducted similar operations against gold trafficking.
Last year, police in Oujda seized 20 kilograms of gold.
The operation led to the arrest of four suspects for their participation in a criminal operation. A year earlier, Moroccan police arrested two Spaniards and two Moroccans for their involvement in the possession of 78 gold bars.
