The South African police are investigating the circumstances leading to Jayden Adams’s death, according to converging reports. The 25-year-old South African International passed away two weeks after contributing to his country’s qualification to the knockout stages of the 2026 World Cup for the first time.
According to the Associated Press, police launched their investigation Monday on the death of Adams after his body was found in a property in the city of Cape Town, South Africa. Authorities have not revealed details of his death.
“Cape Town central police registered an inquest for investigation following the discovery of the body of a 25-year-old male on Saturday,” police stated in a statement sent to The Associated Press. “Circumstances surrounding this incident are under investigation.”
Authorities said that they found the body at a property in the Cape Town neighborhood of Schotsche Kloof at around 11 a.m. on Saturday without giving further details.
“The family were waiting for an autopsy and had not yet made any funeral plans.” Adams’ father, Juanito Adams revealed this to South African TV news station eNCA on Sunday.
“As you all know, it was an untimely death. The family is struggling to process it,” Juanito added. “It won’t be easy to carry on. People say it will become easier, but it won’t. You just learn to live with it.”
Jayden Adams was in the starting lineup for South Africa during their group stage matches, especially their 2-0 loss against Mexico and 1-1 draw with the Czech Republic. He came on as a substitute in the 79th minute against Korea to help secure the historic win that sent South Africa to the knockout stages.
Notably, South Africa Sports Minister Gayton McKenzie recalled that Adams had featured in his team’s group match against the Czech Republic hours after receiving the news of his grandmother’s passing.
The minister urged the public and media to “show restraint and empathy” and to avoid speculation until the final results of the police investigation are released.
