Rabat – Personal data of more than 2 million Moroccans was leaked by hackers, said the French cyber security website Zataz, on September 3.

Cyber-snooping into people’s personal information is a very concerning matter. According to Zataz, the intentional release of private and personal data took place on Friday night.

The cyber-attack exposed the identity, profession, employer name, and email address of 2 million Moroccan netizens.

“A hacker using the name of the founder of Nazism, Adolphe Hitler, put online in three free cloud spaces the personal accounts of men and women from the Kingdom of Morocco,” writes Damien Bancal, founder of Zataz.

The hacker employed the use of social networking site Linkedin to retrieve this information. The database containing leaked information has been circulating on the dark web for several weeks.

“The hacker evokes a second leak of personal data, this time concerning the Mohammed V University of Rabat with more than 2,181 resumes dating from 2013 to 2020” Added Bancal.

The hacker’s invasion of privacy includes illegally sharing postal addresses, photographs, and emails of students in electrical, civil, and industrial engineering, computer engineering, mechanics, computer modeling, and telecommunications engineering.

“The hacker behind this massive database leak did not explain how he was able to extract information related to university students” indicates Bancal.

The same source announced that the data of around 40 million French people are also on sale on the dark web, indicating that, “the hacker behind the stolen database has set up a real marketing plan to resell all the data collected.”

With Morocco’s elections taking place on Wednesday, September 8,  personal data use in campaigns became a critical concern, and citizens complained about the violation of their privacy.
