Rabat – Morocco’s General Directorate of Meteorology (DMN) forecasts strong thunderstorms on Saturday, September 11, followed by a heatwave across Morocco on Sunday, September 12.

DMN issued an orange-level weather notice, saying that strong thunderstorms ranging between 20 and 30 millimeters will affect the provinces of Aousserd and Oued Eddahab, starting from 3 p.m. on Saturday.

The thunderstorms will be followed by a heatwave with temperatures ranging between 39 and 42 degrees Celsius on Sunday.

The heatwave will concern Beni Mellal, Benslimane, Berrechid, Chichaoua, El Hajeb, Kelaa des Sraghna, Fez, Fquih Ben Salah, Kenitra, Khemisset, Khenifra, Khouribga, Marrakech, Meknes, Moulay Yacoub, Nouaceur, Rehamna, Settat, Sidi Bennour, Sidi Kacem, Sidi Slimane, Taounate, Taroudant, and Youssoufia.

Temperatures ranging between 35 and 39 degrees will also hit the provinces of El Jadida, Essaouira, Mediouna, Ouazzane, Rabat, Safi, Sale, and Temara-Skhirat.

The heatwave comes in the wake of scorching temperatures recorded across the country recently.

The temperatures ranged between 36 and 45 degrees during the previous heatwave.

According to the US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), the average global temperature in July was 1.67 degrees Fahrenheit hotter than average.

The scorching temperatures have resulted in wildfires ravaging several countries across the world, including Morocco, Algeria, Greece, and Turkey among others.
