Rabat – Projections and early results show a good start for Morocco’s conservative Al Istiqlal Party.
Reports showed that the party won at least 20 seats, pending official data that is expected to appear online at 12:30 a.m.
Nizar Baraka, the Secretary General of the party appears to have secured a seat in the Larach district in northern Morocco.
Other projections show that Hamdi Ouled Rachid, a member of the Al Istiqlal executive committee and its coordinator in the three regions of the southern provinces, won his seat in Morocco’s Laayoune.
Politician Omar Hejira from the Al Istiqlal also secured a seat in Oujda, in the Oriental region in Morocco.
Early turnover also shows that PAM’s Secretary General secured a seat in Taroudant, while Rally of Independents are celebrating a vast majority of votes in Agadir.
Members of the Justice and Development Party (PJD), however, seem upset amid a torrent of bad news coming from social media and early reports.
The party issued a press release, calling on the Ministry of Interior to investigate “violations” in today’s elections.
Some PJD members also directly accused some other parties of “buying votes.”
PJD’s Driss Azami secured a seat in Fez, but the party reportedly lost ground in cities known for its support for El Othmani’s party, such as Sale and Tangier.
Saad Eddine El Othmani won a seat in the Rabat region.
Only a few minutes separate us from the final result that would determine who is going to be part of the coalition that will make up the next government.
At the end of the polls, the interior ministry announced that the voting rate reached 50.18% at 7 p.m.
