Rabat: Drunk Driver Kills 1 Police Officer, Seriously Injures Another

Rabat- An “Oueld Lefchouch,” Moroccan word for “rich kid,” had reportedly been drinking heavily when he killed a police officer and seriously injured another with his luxury car on Friday, September 3, in Rabat’s Souissi district.

The “rich kid” ran over two police officers on duty outside one of the embassies in Souissi after committing a traffic violation, according to Moroccan newspaper The Daily Assabah.

One of the police officers died instantly, while the second officer was taken to a hospital with critical injuries.

According to sources close to the investigation, the injured officer was admitted to the critical care unit and is facing a life-threatening condition following a head trauma and a fractured spine. After running over the two police officers, the “rich kid”  then fled the scene and abandoned his car.

A brigade in charge of the preliminary investigation succeeded in identifying him, and a national arrest warrant was issued soon after the security services became aware of the situation.

The fugitive surrendered on Saturday evening to the police services of the district of Souissi Takadoum. The driver’s car was towed to the municipal pound by order of the general prosecutor’s office.

He was then referred on Monday, September 6, to the public prosecutor’s office, which will investigate the matter and determine whether he should be prosecuted for intentional violence or manslaughter.

The policeman killed in the accident is the son of a retired police commissioner, his body was handed over to his family on Friday evening. Abdellatif Hammouchi, the head of  Morocco’s General Directorate for National Security (DGSN), closely follows the case and is particularly concerned with the health status of the second policeman, who is fighting for his life.
