Moroccan security services seized a large quantity of psychotropic drugs which was transported by a mini-drone from the Spanish enclave of Ceuta to Fnideq, northern Morocco on Tuesday, October 26.
The narco-drone circled the center of the Ceuta gate at a low altitude, according to a statement from the General Directorate of National Security (DGSN).
The drone was transporting a shipment of 870 smuggled psychotropic tablets.
DGSN said that Moroccan security services intercepted the drone and seized the trafficked drugs.
A preliminary investigation is launched to determine the circumstances of the case and to identify any potential accomplices involved in the smuggling operation.The operation is part of Morocco’s approach to combat drug trafficking throughout the country.
The North African country has been intensifying its efforts to combat both the consumption and trafficking of psychotropic tablets and other related drugs.
Moroccan authorities have arrested a total of 97,564 suspects in 2020 for their involvement in drug smuggling operations. The figure represented a 23% decline compared to 2019.
During the same year, DGSN services also seized 476,923 psychotropic tablets.
Additionally, Morocco’s security services carried out an operation that led to the seizure of 132,167 kilograms of cocaine, 8.5 kilograms of heroin, and over 217 tonnes of cannabis and its derivatives in 2020.
