Rabat- Morocco took part in the 2021 edition of the Stockholm Arab Film Festival, which was held from 22 to 25 October in Stockholm, Sweden.
The Arab Film Festival Stockholm aims to provide a platform for contemporary Arab quality cinema in the Stockholm region, as well as a space for new encounters and fresh perspectives.
Maryam Touzani’s “Adam” and Asmae El Moudir’s documentary “Fi Zaouiyati Oummi” represented Moroccan cinema at the Swedish festival.
Moroccan director Maryam Touzani’s film “Adam” previously won a Bronze Star at the El Gouna Festival.
The movie, which made its debut in theatres in January 2020, spotlighted the controversial topic of unwed mothers in Morocco. The story was inspired by a pregnant woman who was going door-to-door asking for work in Touzani’s hometown of Tangier.
In 2019, the Moroccan Cinema Center (MCC) selected Maryam Touzani’s directorial feature debut, Adam, to represent Morocco at the prestigious Oscar Awards.
As for Asmae El Moudir’s documentary, it addresses issues such as emancipation, migration and the desire to belong to a community. Produced by Aljazeera Documentary Channel in 2020, “Fi Zaouiyati Oummi” is Asmae El Moudir’s first documentary film.
Her documentary has already been screened at several international events such as; the Amsterdam International Documentary Film Festival, Reel Visions in Switzerland, the Malmö Arab Film Festival in Sweden and the Durban International Film Festival in South Africa.
Besides Morocco, this year’s edition of the Stockholm Arab Film Festival saw the participation of several Arab countries such as Tunisia, Egypt, Palestine, Jordan and Lebanon.
Largely funded by the city of Stockholm, this year’s Stockholm Arab Film Festival is an initiative of the organizers behind the renowned Malmö Arab Film Festival (MAFF).
MAFF is the leading and largest film festival with a focus on Arabic film outside the Arab world and is southern Sweden’s largest public film festival.
