Denver – The Rabat-Sale Tramway Company has announced that it will be reopening its service from Hassan II station to Al Alaouyine station starting Monday, November 1st.
The reopening of the service is ahead of the November 4 estimation officials gave when the track initially shut down.
In its announcement, the company cited “the accelerated progress of construction work on the road hopper at the intersection of avenue Hassan II and avenue Al Alaouyine in Rabat” as the reason behind the tram line’s rapid reopening.
Suspension of the line began earlier this month, allowing construction workers access as they continued building a new underground passageway.
Officials at the Rabat-Sale company commended the construction worker’s efficiency for “the tireless efforts of all the teams and companies involved in this project to restore service to travelers.”
The passageway is part of a larger infrastructure development initiative throughout Rabat. Dubbed “Rabat City of Lights, Capital of Construction,” the project is projected to modernize traffic throughout the Moroccan capital. The initial cost for the project has been set at just under $4 million.
Local officials and residents hope the new Sidi Makhlouf road hopper will facilitate road traffic to and from Hassan II Bridge in a safe and efficient manner. The underground tunnel is also expected to be a key factor in relieving rush hour traffic in the area, particularly during the early mornings and late evenings.
As Morocco seeks to maintain its expanding national road infrastructure, government officials are on track to spend $1 billion this year alone, with road expansion projects ranging from Rabat, Casablanca, and Nador.
