Rabat – Morocco’s Minister of Health, Khalid Ait Taleb, warned that Morocco is still not immune against new strains, or new waves of the COVID-19 virus.

The minister warned on Thursday, October 28, that a new wave of infections is spreading rapidly throughout several countries due to the appearance of new COVID variants.

Ait Taleb urged Moroccan citizens to be vigilant in protecting the “gains” Morocco has achieved through the adoption of strict preventive measures.

He also called on citizens to continue to engage into the vaccination campaign with an objective of achieving the desired collective immunity.

The minister emphasized that Morocco “has gone green,” citing the decrease in the number of COVID-19 cases and deaths.

He also established that the national vaccination campaign is ongoing in a “climate marked by citizens’ support for the preventive approach based on the adoption of the vaccine pass.”

Ait Taleb highlighted the support of  citizens’  for the preventive measure in the midst of the ongoing campaign and protests against the vaccine pass mandate.

Over the past two weeks, Morocco has witnessed protests and demonstrations in several cities, including Casablanca and Rabat, against the adoption of the mandatory vaccine pass as a measure to access public spaces.

The protesters urged the Moroccan government to withdraw the decision to adopt the vaccine pass, deeming it as against freedom of movement and individualism.

In response, the National Commission for the Control of Data (CNDP) said that the purpose of adopting a vaccine pass in Morocco does not seek to restrict movement of citizens but, instead, aims to “promote responsible movement.”

The CNDP also reassured citizens that the vaccine pass and the mobile application used to present vaccine passes poses no privacy risk or infringement of personal data. The CNDP is currently consulting with software developers to continue to maintain the app’s data privacy in an effort to reassure citizens amid surging doubts and concerns.
