Rabat – Morocco has participated in the inaugural “Balloon World Cup” held in Tarragona, Spain on Thursday, October 14. Teams from 32 countries participated in the first world cup of a “sport” most people are unlikely to have heard of.
The “Balloon World Cup,” like many strange ideas, originated on social media. During the COVID-19 lockdowns, the idea of competitive “ballooning” emerged. The competition revolves around keeping a balloon from hitting the ground, while attempting to make it difficult for the competing team to do the same.

The venue for the first balloon world cup featured a pitch that resembles an obstacle course of sorts. A table, couch and even a car featured as part of the obstacles available to competitors. The inaugural event was well received, with CNN and BBC Sport covering the new world cup, which was hosted by FC Barcelona legend Gerard Pique.

The new sport, not to be confused with (hot air) “ballooning,” appears to have been a massive success, with cheering crowds, featuring both male and female competitors, and featuring a riveting final that saw Germany defeated by Peru.
Representing Morocco was Yahya El Hajouji, who performed well, defeating Sweden and Italy before being knocked out of the competition by Spain in the quarter finals.
