Denver – Officials from the Rabat-Sale Tramway company announced a temporary suspension along the tramway between Hassan II Bridge and November 16th stations due to ongoing construction.
Rabat-Sale Tramway currently manages 19.5 kilometers of tramway across both Rabat and Sale. According to Railway-Technology, the tramway transports an average of 180,000 passengers across the Rabat-Sale municipality every day.
The 17-day suspension of services between the two stations will begin next Tuesday, October 19th, and last until November 4th. Officials from the company explained the suspension was necessary to complete the construction of a new underground passage between Hassan II and Alaoui street.
To accommodate the disruption of services, officials have established a special transportation service for passengers between the two stations, in addition to dedicated pedestrian lanes with provisions for travelers with disabilities. Guides will also be present along the route to help pedestrians travel between both stations.
City officials maintained construction is scheduled to take place around the clock on a 24 hour per day schedule until the project is completed. Officials hope to disrupt the normal flow of traffic as little as possible during the new tunnel’s construction.
Construction of the new project has closed portions of the city’s roads due to the tunnel’s construction. The project, developed under the “Rabat City of Lights, Capital of Construction” project, is reported to cost nearly $4 million.
Morocco has started a series of infrastructure development projects this year to accommodate the amount of daily traffic throughout the country. Authorities have made designs to modernize Morocco’s roads and facilitate a more efficient flow of traffic for the 1.2 million daily passengers that drive the country’s roads.
