Denver – Moroccan diplomat Mustapha El Yamli is now the head of the Arab League’s office in Berlin after a nomination by fellow members of the regional organization.
The League’s Secretary-General, Ahmed Aboul Gheit, officially nominated El Yamli to the position following a meeting of the Council of Foreign Ministers in September. The nomination was part of the League’s initiative “to appoint new ambassadors to head vacant Arab League missions abroad,” according to League representatives.
Prior to becoming a diplomat for Morocco, El Yamli served as an assistant professor at Hassan II University in Casablanca. During his career as a political representative of Morocco, El Yamli has worked for multiple positions in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. His work included positions at Morocco’s embassies in Brazil, Egypt, and as Consul General for Morocco in Girona, Spain.
In his new position, El Yamli’s mission will consist in representing the shared interests of the 22 member states of the Arab League in Germany. The 76-year old league representing the Arab states has established connections around the world, often acting as a unified political representative for countries within the MENA region, and providing a central location of dialogue to handle ongoing geopolitical issues.
Morocco continues to be among the most vocal members of the group, and the North African country has been commended by the Arab League members for its efforts towards promoting and sustaining peace and stability in the MENA region.
The Moroccan government has also received support from the majority of Arab League member states in its fight for sovereignty within the Western Sahara region in southern Morocco. League members have consistently backed Morocco’s claims to the region, and have called for the UN-led political process in the Sahara dispute to uphold the provisions laid out in Morocco’s 2007 Autonomy Plan.
