Rabat – Morocco’s Central Bureau of Judicial Investigation (BCIJ) has aborted an imminent terrorist plot today, October 6.
BCIJ issued a press release, announcing that it thwarted the terror plot after dismantling an extremist five-member cell operating in Tangier.
The terror cell members are aged between 22 and 28.
All of the suspects have pledged loyalty to ISIS.
The Special Forces of the General Directorate of Territorial Surveillance (DGST) conducted an intervention operation that resulted in the arrest of the alleged emir or leader of the cell.
The main suspect exhibited violent resistance, which compelled the DGST special forces to launch sound bombs to warn and neutralize the threat.
Morocco’s Special Forces were also required to evacuate the cell leader’s family members to protect them from any potential harm associated with the “possibility of any possible explosion.”
According to the preliminary investigation, there were numerous bottles of various sizes containing nitric acid, quantities of nails, electrical wires, and six small gas cylinders.
The BCIJ also seized additional items during the arrest operation, including sharp cutters, flat tools, a large sword, and pictures of Adnan Abu Al Walid Al Sahrawi, the former leader of ISIS in the Sahel and Saharan region.
Al Sahrawi was a member of the Polisario Front, and was killed in September by French forces in the Sahel region.
Security services arrested the remaining four members of the cell, who were involved in a terror plot aimed at undermining Morocco’s national security.
The investigations revealed that the members of the terror cell conducted a recruitment campaign to attract and lure more people to their terror organization.
The members of the terror cells also purchased explosive supplies with the aim of manufacturing traditional explosive devices for remote detonation operations.
The terror attacks were targeting security headquarters, security officials, and public spaces that are populated by both Moroccans and foreign citizens alike
One of the suspects, a technician with a specialty in electric engineering, offered training sessions to members of the cell on explosive manufacturing and preparation.
The emir of the cell established contacts with ISIS leaders in the Sahel and sub-Saharan regions to receive financial funds, and to ensure sufficient supplies and weapons to finance his terror projects.
BCIJ placed the suspect in custody pending further investigation, and to determine the circumstances of the case, the cell’s terror plots, as well as determine the extent of the local and international networks of the terror cell.
