Rabat – Morocco’s government has decided today to suspend regular passenger flights to and from France, starting tomorrow, November 26.

The suspension of flights between France and Morocco comes at the recommendation of the Interministerial Committee for the Coordination and Monitoring of the Mechanism which governs international travel during the COVID-19 crisis.

The committee found the decision necessary to preserve Morocco’s achievements in terms of its management of the domestic COVID-19 epidemic and to respond to deteriorating public health conditions in certain European countries.

The suspension will come into effect from November 26 at 11:59 p.m. until further notice.

The measure is part of Morocco’s state of emergency, which enables the country’s government to take proactive measures to challenge a possible deterioration of the health situation.

Morocco has been under a state of emergency since March 2020. In June, Morocco announced a gradual opening of borders, but warned that it will take all preventive measures in the case of any deterioration in the epidemiological situation.

Several countries in Europe are facing alarming waves of new COVID-19 infections and hospitalizations, including Germany.

The European country is now witnessing over 100,000 COVID-related deaths in total.

The French government announced on November 24 that France is preparing new COVID-19 containment measures amid a surge in infections.

“We must protect the French people by building on what we have, to save the end-of-year festivities and get through the winter as well as possible,” Government Spokesperson Gabriel Attal said.

Like many countries, Morocco is actively trying to prevent further COVID-19 repercussions on public health and the economy. The health ministry has repeatedly called on citizens to wear masks in public and maintain social distancing measures. The Moroccan government also urges citizens to engage in the national vaccination campaign, emphasizing that the country is not immune to another wave of COVID-19.
