Rabat – Local authorities in the southern Moroccan city of Dakhla have launched the “Dakhla Smart City” to highlight their commitment to sustainable development.
Badr Kanouni, the president of the Al Omrane development, construction, and housing group, said the initiative is part of Morocco’s new vision for developing southern regions.
He stressed that the “Dakhla Smart City” project is inspired and based on principles of sustainable development.
The project will contribute to speeding up the urbanization process in the region and provide next-generation infrastructure to meet the needs of Dakhla residents, Kanouni explained.
He also highlighted that the “Dakhla Smart City” initiative will provide the city with proper infrastructure capable of attracting investments and encouraging economic activities in the region.
A meeting organized last week to present the result of the “Dakhla Smart City” development project saw the participation of 30 architecture firms in the competition to secure the construction deal with the city of Dakhla.
During the meeting, the state-owned group Al Omrane signed a collaboration deal with the private sector to implement the “Dakhla Smart City” project.
Al Omrane group has carried out housing projects bordering MAD 7 billion ($773.400 million) in southern regions. Kanouni explained that 145,000 families benefited from the housing project, amounting to 60% of the region’s residents.
Kanouni announced that the estimated budget for the urbanization plans is estimated at MAD 2.56 billion ($282.843 million).
Back in May, Morocco announced plans to transform Dakhla into a smart city by investing in digitized infrastructure. The plan, known as “Dakhla Smart City”, is a collaboration between the regional municipality of Dakhla, and Chinese tech giant Huawei.
