Rabat – A petition has been launched online to urge Royal Air Maroc (RAM) to “bring back” direct flights between Boston and Casablanca.
The petition, which appeared on Change.org a few weeks ago, argues that it is inconvenient to drive from Boston to New York to take a flight to Casablanca.
RAM should consider relaunching a Boston-Casablanca flight “because of the inconvenience of driving from Boston to New York, especially for the families with kids, most of the Passengers from Massachestts and its surrounding states will not be going to take the New York-Casablanca flight anymore,” said Mohamed Moutawil, the initiator of the petition.
Moutawil said his intention was to “kindly” ask Royal Air Maroc to bring the Boston-Casablanca flight “just like they brought back to Miami-Casablanca.”
Around 2,160 people have so far signed the petition online.
In the comments, many are emphasizing the need to bring back the flight to life as Boston hosts a big Moroccan community in Boston.
“Yes they have to bring me back cause I’m 60 up I’m not going to New York if I want to go to Casablanca,” one commented.
Another commenter emphasized that the Moroccan community and many other Africans and tourists from Boston “need” a direct flight to Morocco.
Another one joined El Moutaakil in stressing the point that traveling from Boston to New York to get a flight to Morocco is very tiring for families with children.
“We hope to travel from Boston to Morocco… We had the experience of traveling from Boston to Casablanca Morocco directly in 2018, and the trip was really beautiful and wonderful,” one said.
Royal Air Maroc announced a direct flight from Casablanca to Boston a couple of years ago.
The company said Boston would be the fourth city served by Royal Air Maroc in the US after New York, Washington, and Miami.
On its website, RAM offers flights from Boston to Casablanca but with one stop in another airport.
While members of the Moroccan diaspora in Boston are desperately waiting for the opening of the Boston-Casablanca direct flight, Morocco closed its borders as part of its campaign to avoid the outbreak of the Omicron variant of the COVID-19 virus.
In late November, the Moroccan government announced a two-week travel ban, suspending all flights from and to Morocco.
In line with the two-week border closure, Royal Air Maroc has also suspended all of its flights.
The Moroccan national carrier is now operating only special flights to help people stuck in Morocco go back to their countries of residence.
