Rabat – Moroccan security services prevented on December 29 a group of 30 irregular Moroccan migrants from entering the Spanish enclave of Ceuta.
El Faro de Ceuta reported that the would-be migrants wanted to access Ceuta through the Tarajal crossing.
The attempted irregular migration took place after midnight, with the migrants managing to reach the beach near the border breakwater with Ceuta. “Morocco’s immediate reaction was decisive in preventing access without the civil guard having to intervene,” the Spanish news outlet said.
Morocco’s security services recently reinforced control at the Spanish enclave to avoid a mass eruption nearly seven months after the May incident. In May, thousands of migrants from sub-Saharan countries and Morocco swam from the northern city of Fnideq to the Spanish enclave of Ceuta.
Spanish news agency EFE said Morocco reinforced security in the region on December 24.
The decision was made as a result of reports about the alleged relaxation of security measures at the border crossing.
Morocco has been intensifying efforts against irregular migration and human trafficking. In 2021, Moroccan police dismantled 150 criminal networks active in organizing irregular migration.
During the operations, security services arrested 415 suspects for links to migrant trafficking networks, as well as 12,231 would-be irregular migrants.
