Rabat- Hassan II University of Casablanca holds a patent for a new robotic scorpion venom extraction system.
The new system ensures a fully automated operation without any manual operator intervention needed. A book about the process will be released in January 2022.
The invention’s patent was issued on November 30, 2021, receiving praise from the Moroccan Office of Industrial and Commercial Property (OMPIC).
The revolutionary automated system was completed by a team of researchers at the Biology and Health Laboratory of the Ben M’Sik Faculty of Sciences in Casablanca.
In a press release, the team said that this robot “is attracting the attention of many national and international scientists, in particular poison producers and industrial companies.”
Thanks to its promising medicinal properties, scorpion venom is one of the most expensive poisons in the world, and “used as an active ingredient in the manufacture of medicines and cosmetics products, as well as in the production of anti-venom serum,” added the press release.
The venom collection is done via a network of automated conveyors and a central extraction unit that produces electric discharges specifically adapted to each species of scorpion. This method is a faster and risk-free process than previously used.
