Rabat – Morocco’s Health Ministry promptly confirmed and reassured the public that essential medicines in the treatment protocol for COVID-19 patients are available to meet demands.
The ministry reassured citizens that all medicines prescribed to COVID-19 patients, including chloroquine, azithromycin, zinc, and vitamins C and D are available in formulations that cover demand.
The statement came after fake news online alleged an excessive shortage of COVID-19 medications at pharmacies.
Regarding medicines used for cold-related illnesses, such as the flu, the ministry said that many generic medicines are locally manufactured and will cover the shortage.
The ministry stressed that the national stock of medications in Morocco is subject to strict monitoring to ensure a reserve stock of all essential medicines is adequately maintained.
The ministry emphasized that it urged all personnel in the industry to commit to providing the necessary medicine with a regulatory safety stockpile. They insisted on a stock of three months for industrial and pharmaceutical companies, and one month for distributors.
The order comes amid the spread of the Omicron variant during the annual flu season.
The ministry called on all distributors to equitably give medicines to pharmacies to ensure their availability to citizens in all regions across Morocco.
The ministry also called on all parties to report shortages related to essential medicines.
On Thursday, the Moroccan Federation of Pharmaceutical Industry and Innovation joined the ministry to reassure citizens about the competence of the COVID-19 treatment protocol.
The federation said that no production disruptions in stocks of the COVID-19 medicines have been recorded.
The federation also stressed that it is working in close cooperation with public authorities to anticipate future challenges, particularly those related to logistical services.
