Rabat – Neil El Aynaoui was one of the revelations of the last Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) journey, standing out for his grit and determination. The 24-year-old midfielder asserted himself as a key player in Mohamed Ouahbi’s Moroccan squad this summer, as was also the case under Walid Regragui.Â
After a late professional breakthrough in the French lower divisions and a first experience of European competitions with Lens, El Aynaoui has been playing for AS Roma since this season, a symbol of a career progressing slowly but steadily.Â
A childhood shaped by sportÂ
El Aynaoui was born in 2001 in Nancy into a sporting family, between French rigor and Moroccan heritage. His father is Moroccan from Rabat and a former top-level tennis player, Younes El Aynaoui, while his French mother is a former tennis player as well.Â
The young Neil spent most of his youth in Eastern France, with a brief spell near Barcelona in Spain, a period that greatly shaped his technical development and discipline, inspired by the profile of the legendary Spanish midfielder Andres Iniesta.Â
Having joined AS Nancy Lorraine academy at the age of eight, El Aynaoui hesitated between football and tennis for many years before fully committing to football after earning his first call-up to Nancy’s reserve team at 17.Â
The emergence of a midfielder
El Aynaoui signed his first professional contract with Nancy ahead of the 2021/2022 season, making his first senior match against Toulouse before scoring his first goal against Paris FC. He finished the season with 28 appearances in Ligue 2, for 2 goals and 1 assist.
Despite the club’s relegation the following season, El Aynaoui stayed in Nancy, where he featured in 34 matches in the National, France’s third division. That campaign marked a clear statistical breakthrough with four goals and two assists to his name. He also received the captain’s armband, a rare achievement for a player of his age. During this period, his profile began to take shape, defined by an exceptional work rate, relentless energy, and sharp game intelligence.Â
Those qualities soon drew the attention of Lens scouts, paving the way for a move to one of France’s most storied clubs.Â
Making his mark in Ligue 1
The young midfielder joined RC Lens in June 2023, signing a four-year contract. In his first season, he made 31 appearances, scoring 1 goal and providing 2 assists.Â
The following season marked both his physical development and offensive explosion. He scored 8 goals and provided 1 assist in just 25 matches, becoming one of Lens’ most influential players despite not being a regular starter. Beyond his fighting spirit, his ability to break lines as a box-to-box midfielder transformed him from a promising talent into an established Ligue 1 player.Â
His discovery of the UEFA Champions League and the UEFA Europa League further accelerated his rise. Although Lens were eliminated in the Champions League group stage and in the Europa League round of 16, the experience he gained opened the doors to AS Roma.
New challenge in Rome
After two seasons with Lens, El Aynaoui was transferred to AS Roma for €23.5 million, taking another step forward by signing a five-year contract. Joining a club with greater financial resources and higher ambitions, the Moroccan began the 2025/2026 season as a substitute, aiming to challenge the hierarchy under coach Gian Piero Gasperini.Â
Finishing the season with 34 appearances across all competitions, El Aynaoui gradually earned an important role in the rotation, although he had yet to establish himself as a regular starter. The midfielder continued his progression, particularly in his passing, ending the season with an 89% pass completion rate. His tactical profile was often deployed depending on the game context, amid fierce competition in midfield from players such as Manu Koné and Niccolo Pisilli.Â
Morocco’s new key figure
After hesitating for some time between France and Morocco, El Aynaoui first represented the Atlas Lions at the Olympic level before committing to the senior national side. He did not take long to establish himself under Regragui and now Ouahbi. As of today, the AS Roma player has earned 19 caps with the Moroccan jersey since making his debut against Niger in September 2025, scoring twice in friendly matches against Ecuador and Paraguay.Â
The time he needed to assert himself in Morocco’s midfield was remarkably short. Since his first call-up, he has played almost every minute, including all 690 minutes of Morocco’s victorious 2025 AFCON campaign, where he emerged as one of the tournament’s standout performers.Â
Building on his winter performances, El Aynaoui continued to impress during the FIFA World Cup 2026 group stage, emerging as a real leader of the team.
The engine of Morocco’s midfield
Known for his relentless work rate, the midfielder gives the impression that he is everywhere on the pitch, fighting to win every ball, both on the ground and in the air. Beyond his activity off-ball intensity, El Aynaoui also possesses genuine technical qualities, particularly his ability to switch play with accurate long passes. His 90% pass completion rate during the last AFCON reflects both his consistency and the speed at which he has become a key part of Morocco’s long-term plans.Â
Although his game is already well-rounded, the 24-year-old player can still improve in a few areas. His aggressive style sometimes leads to unnecessary fouls, while some performances have been marked by inconsistency, with his intensity and concentration dropping as matches go on. That may also be a consequence of being heavily relied upon by his coaches.Â
A modern box-to-box midfielder, El Aynaoui has already established himself as one of Morocco’s key players at an ideal age, with his full potential still ahead of him. All that remains is to confirm this upward trajectory and continue refining his game, and manage his desire to excel. One thing is already certain: he is a midfielder every football fan should keep an eye on.Â
