Rabat – Egypt has made history at the 2026 FIFA World Cup. The Pharaohs booked their first-ever spot in the Round of 16 by defeating Australia in a dramatic penalty shootout.
The match ended in a 1-1 deadlock after both regular and extra time. Egypt then won the shootout 4-2 to seal the historic victory. Hossam Abdelmaguid scored the final, decisive penalty kick to send Egyptian fans into wild celebrations.
Earlier in the shootout, team captain Mohamed Salah trickily chipped his penalty into the net to keep Egypt in control. The entire Egyptian team held its nerve perfectly under immense pressure.
The match started brightly for Egypt. Midfielder Emam Ashour scored an early goal in the 13th minute to give his team a 1-0 lead. Egypt controlled the first half with sharp passing and strong defense.
However, Australia fought back in the second half. In the 55th minute, an unlucky mistake by Egyptian defender Mohamed Hany resulted in an own goal. That accident tied the game at 1-1.
Neither team could find a winning goal during the rest of regular time or the 30 minutes of extra time. That set up the high-stakes penalty shootout where Egypt ultimately triumphed.
