Rabat – Morocco’s Head of Government Aziz Akhannouch announced on January 25 the new cooperation between the Ministry of Justice and the Royal Institute of Amazigh Culture during a government meeting at the headquarters of the Ministry of Justice.

The partnership aims to provide guidance to Amazigh speakers within administrations and courts and the translation of legal and administrative documents from and to the Amazigh language, Akhannouch reported.

The gradual integration of the Amazigh language in Morocco’s judicial system is set to lead to the adoption of Amazigh as a language for litigation as well as the generalization of simultaneous translation for Amazigh speakers within administrations and courts, covering the entirety of legal procedures from investigation to the verdict.

Akhannouch noted that the partnership is the result of the new government’s efforts to address the instructions of law 26-16 on the integration of Amazigh language in all aspects of life, “education, culture, judicial system, and administration.”

During the meeting, the government renewed its commitment to its project to make the Amazigh language an integral part of Moroccan public life. “I reiterate our determination […] to carry out our obligations throughout this mandate, so that the constitutional goals, the royal will, and popular aspirations related to this national workshop are achieved,” Akhannouch said.

In line with law 26-16, the Moroccan government allocated MAD 200 million ($21.52 million) for the officialization of the Amazigh language under a plan to reach a total budget of MAD 1 billion ($107 million) by 2025.

To support and encourage Amazigh writers and intellectuals, the government committed to translating a body of literary work into Amazigh language and creating new prizes for Morocco’s Book Award on Amazigh Creativity and Studies in the Field of Amazigh Cultures.

Additionally, the government decided to provide annual monetary support to Amazigh writers and Amazigh associations, among other measures.
